Audience

This course is suitable for those who have operational responsibility for receiving concerns about the safety and welfare of children and young people, who make decisions about what action needs to be taken, contacting and liaising with other agencies involved in safeguarding children, especially children’s social care.

Aim

To outline the roles and responsibilities of the ‘Designated Lead / Designated Safeguarding Children’s Officer’.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the participants should be able to:

  • Describe the role of the designated safeguarding children officer and state the key areas of responsibility
  • List the key legislation and guidance underpinning your organisation’s policy for responding to concerns about a child’s safety or welfare
  • Decide what steps your organisation needs to take in order to effectively safeguard children and young people with whom it has contact
  • Identify blocks to staff reporting concerns within your organisation and identify how to overcome these
  • State what is likely to happen following an enquiry to MASH and what further role you may have as a Designated Lead
  • List the key legislation and guidance in connection with recording and sharing of information relating to concerns about a child in Jersey
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the emotional dimension of safeguarding work and be able to identify and network for personal support

Venue

The course is being held at Drouet de Barentin, Institute of Law, Top Floor, Turner Building, Highlands Lane, St Saviour. Parking is on a first come, first served basis at Highlands. You must sign in and collect your parking permit for the course from the Institute of Law (not Highlands College Reception).

Lunch and Refreshments

Teas and coffees are provided, however, you will need to make your own arrangements for lunch. There is a cafeteria on site.
