This course is suitable for those who have operational responsibility for receiving concerns about the safety and welfare of children and young people, who make decisions about what action needs to be taken, contacting and liaising with other agencies involved in safeguarding children, especially children’s social care.


To outline the roles and responsibilities of the ‘Designated Lead/ Designated Safeguarding Children’s Officer ’

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the participants should be able to:

  • Describe the role of the designated safeguarding children officer and state the key areas of responsibility
  • List the key legislation and guidance underpinning your organisation’s policy for responding to concerns about a child’s safety or welfare
  • Decide what steps your organisation needs to take in order to effectively safeguard children and young people with whom it has contact
  • Identify blocks to staff reporting concerns within your organisation and identify how to overcome these
  • State what is likely to happen following an enquiry to MASH and what further role you may have as a Designated Lead
  • List the key legislation and guidance in connection with recording and sharing of information relating to concerns about a child in Jersey
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the emotional dimension of safeguarding work and be able to identify and network for personal support

There is no parking at Gervais. We suggest you use the free parking in St Aubin:

* On the road on the way into St Aubin’s from town
* Just past La Haule slip (by flats on the right hand side, if coming from town)
* At the top of the cobbled High Street (turn right up La Haule Hill, turn left just past Lucas Brother’s farm shop to get to the top of the High Street)
* At the entrance to the railway walk (on the left before the St Brelade’s language college)

There is also Pay card parking available:

* Behind the Parish Hall – 2 hours for a one unit paycard
* In front of Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club

Lunch and Refreshments

Teas and coffees are provided through the day, however, you will need to make your own arrangements for lunch. You are welcome to use the kitchen facilities available at the venue and plates and cutlery are available if needed. Please ensure that all items of crockery and other items are washed and put away after use.
If you prefer, St Aubin offers a wide variety of cafes, restaurants and public houses.
