What training do I need?

We have a range of courses for the children and adult’s workforce in Jersey.

What to consider

If you work or volunteer with children, young people or Adults at Risk in Jersey, you’ll need safeguarding training that gives you the right knowledge and skills to help keep people safe.

Training requirements depend on your role and responsibilities, so it’s important to discuss your training needs with your line manager to ensure you complete the courses that match what you do.

Choosing the right course

Elsewhere, you may have seen training described as ‘Level 1’, ‘Level 2’ or ‘Level 3’. However, these terms are not used consistently across different sectors or countries and they are not part of our safeguarding framework.

Instead, we provide clear, role‑based training pathways to help you identify the learning that’s appropriate for you.

Because terms vary between organisations, we recommend checking the aims and objectives of any course to make sure it meets your organisation’s expectations.

On our training pages, each course clearly explains what you will learn and which roles it is designed for.

About our training

Safeguarding Partnership Jersey offers a wide range of learning opportunities, whether you’re new to safeguarding or in a specialist role such as a Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Our training is developed using local safeguarding procedures and reflects current best practice, statutory guidance and Jersey legislation.

On completion, you’ll receive a certificate of achievement and gain access to additional resources to support your ongoing learning and help you safeguard children, young people and Adults at Risk effectively.

Training Framework

The Informed tier provides essential safeguarding awareness for individuals who have indirect contact with children, such as kitchen staff, administrative personnel, and facilities teams.

This level ensures staff understand the basic principles of safeguarding, can recognise common signs of concern, and know how to report worries promptly.

It equips them with the confidence to play their part in keeping children safe, even if they are not directly involved in care or teaching.

The Skilled tier is designed for those who work directly with children—such as teaching assistants, support workers, playworkers, and volunteers – who have direct interaction and a duty to notice safeguarding concerns.

This level builds on foundational knowledge, helping staff develop a deeper understanding of child development, indicators of harm, appropriate responses, and the importance of safe, professional boundaries.

It prepares them to respond sensitively and effectively when concerns arise.

The Enhanced tier is for professionals such as teachers and staff who have responsibilities that extend beyond daily contact, including collaborating with multi‑agency partners and contributing to safeguarding reports.

Training at this level strengthens analytical skills, report‑writing capability, and understanding of statutory processes. Participants gain confidence in interpreting safeguarding information, working within multi‑agency frameworks and contributing to more complex safeguarding discussions and decisions.

The Specialist tier supports those in leadership or designated safeguarding roles, such as Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs), deputies, and senior leaders.

This level equips individuals to oversee safeguarding practice, manage complex cases, advise colleagues and work closely with external agencies.

Specialist training develops strategic understanding, decision‑making, supervision skills and the ability to create and maintain a strong safeguarding culture across the organisation.
