Harmful Sexual Behaviour: Be part of the conversation

In 2021, we commissioned an independent audit of Harmful Sexual Behaviour (HSB) in Jersey via the NSPCC. The report highlighted the need to raise awareness amongst professionals to increase their knowledge and confidence; to ensure consistent use of thresholds and to focus on meeting children’s needs rather than just on managing risks.

Prevalence data for harmful sexual behaviour in Jersey is developing. National research into prevalence in other jurisdictions has indicated that about a third of child sexual abuse cases are likely to be by other children and young people.

We believe it’s hugely important for all professionals and volunteers that work with children and young people in Jersey to be trained, equipped and confident in recognising and responding to harmful and problematic sexual behaviours as early intervention is key.

In 2022, we saw the launch of the Safeguarding Partnership Board Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation (CSAE) strategy with a key objective under identification and prevention to ensure we develop appropriate programmes for children and young people with harmful sexual behaviour.

This year we have seen the launch of the Brook Traffic Light Tool training and plans to roll out train the trainer workshops for understanding harmful sexual behaviour.

The ‘Harmful Sexual Behaviour: Be part of the conversation’ event helped to showcase some of the work we have progressed, spotlight services supporting children, young people and their families, and generate some healthy and reflective discussions among professionals. Our aim was to increase awareness of HSB and the local context, provide an understanding of the work currently happening in Jersey across the partnership, and an understanding of the future plans for HSB.

The following people spoke at the event:

  • Vicki Larbalestier – Team Manager for NSPCC Jersey
  • Paul Ryan – Inspector for the Public Protection Unit, SOJP
  • Kirsteen Flint – Team Manager Children and Families Hub
  • Deryn Evans – Forensic Medical Examiner and Clinical Director for Dewberry House
