We welcomed 90 delegates to our adult safeguarding conference at the Radisson Hotel on 13th September 2022. We were delighted to have two keynote speakers from the UK: Dr Adi Cooper, a national lead on safeguarding adults and the Independent Chair of two London Safeguarding Adults Boards, and Deborah Barnett, a consultant and author of several books relating to safeguarding adults and self-neglect. Both speakers gave insight into the progress made on safeguarding adults since the 2014 Care Act and how Making Safeguarding Personal (MSP) should work in practice. Deborah’s talk on self-neglect and hoarding was powerful in its message that ‘sometimes the most important conversations are the most difficult to engage in.’
In the afternoon, we heard about the local context with sessions from My Voice, Enable Jersey, the Chair of Jersey’s Working Group on Self-Neglect and the Government of Jersey’s Capacity Team. Listening to the voice of an expert by experience in Enable Jersey’s session was the highlight of the day for many of the delegates.
